Initial Research

Often times kids will say to themselves or their parents that they are "running away from home." But almost never does the child actually follow through with this threat. The idea that I have settled on tells the story of a young boy that grows up being homeless as a result of running away from home.

The hope is to create a new take on the typical coming of age story. In order to keep the story relatable and realistic I researched actual run-away stories of kids. The first one I came upon was the story of Michael McNamee in The Palm Beach Post. Michael ran away at the age of 11. He was able to travel from Oakland, California to Chicago, Illinois with only 35 cents in his pocket. Although this was 50 years ago and it only happened for a few days, the idea of travel still stuck with me. A screenshot of the article is at right. Another article I found told the story of an unnamed boy that lived in an elevator shaft for two years. The boy stole from the apartment complex where the elevator was located. He went unnoticed for quite a while before people put together the faulty elevator and the robberies. This element of turning to crime and theft is another idea I plan on incorporating into the plot. That article is shown below. These elements will definitely contribute to how the film is written and shot.
